Our approach to occupational therapy is over 20 years in the making

As a parent to a bright and beautiful sensory child, good days can feel overshadowed by the bad. Family vacations are usually cut short, visits to the grocery store turn into a sensory meltdown, morning routines take hours, and now you feel like you’ve reached the end of your rope.

For over 20 years, our holistic approach to occupational therapy has evolved into a sensory-integrated, play-based practice rooted in empathy and backed by science to create a reality where bad days become the exception, not the rule. Play is an essential tool that influences your child’s life and helps develop physical coordination, emotional maturity, social skills, and the self-confidence to seek new experiences and environments.

A typical session can look a lot like simple playtime: we’ll be on the floor engaging and playing with your child, pushing them on a swing, or creating obstacle courses. But a lot more is going on beneath the surface than just play.
We’re challenging your child’s:

  • Sensory system
  • Gross and fine motor abilities
  • Visual-motor coordination and balance
  • Social-emotional and self-regulation skills

By entering your child’s world, we gently guide them towards reaching their developmental milestones, recognize and manage their emotions, and regulate behavior based on thoughtful decision making.

If your child would benefit from a hybrid approach of occupational, speech and physical therapy, connect with us today to learn how Healing Synergy can create a custom program tailored to your child’s individual needs.

This is why we do what we do

"You were truly a lifesaver with my son Aaron Rodriguez!! You helped him understand how he could control his “craziness” by doing simple exercises and techniques to reduce his anxiety. You helped me as the parent to be a better advocate for him educating others about Aaron’s sensory integration. Never thought when we first starting seeing you Aaron would be thriving and almost graduating college! He always remembers his Kavitha N Krishnan-Shields and how patient and loving she was and dedicated in helping him with the simplest to the most complicated issues, whether he was in the classroom, playing baseball, or being home. Thank you Kavitha. We will forever be grateful to you!!"

How long does occupational therapy take?

Unfortunately, the answer depends on your child and their needs. Each child we work with is unique in regards to their skill level and needs. Some children may progress quickly, while others may take more time.

Sessions are typically scheduled 2-3 times per week for at least 45-60 minutes.

Our occupational therapists place a strong emphasis on parent/caregiver education for this reason; it’s important you feel empowered to advocate for and support your child.

Why do you use play therapy?

Play is an integral part of your child’s development. Through play, kids learn to communicate, manage their emotions, gain valuable sensory input, and learn to make sense of the world around them.

After a thorough evaluation, your child’s occupational therapist will set therapeutic goals, decide on what limits may be necessary, and formulate an action plan for how to proceed with treatment.

We can learn a lot from how your child interacts with different toys. Your child may use play to act out fears and anxieties, as a coping mechanism, or to problem-solve. We’ll use our observations as a guidepost to inform every phase of your child’s treatment.

We know every child is unique, it’s why we tailor our therapy programs around your child’s individual needs. As therapy progresses, goals are usually reassessed and adjusted as necessary.

What is the difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy?

Occupational therapy centers on developing your child’s ability to complete activities of daily living, while physical therapy focuses on improving their ability to perform movement. What makes occupational therapy unique is that occupational therapists treat the whole child – not just one issue.
